Am I feeding too much? I have a little over a 5 week old baby and he is already wanting 3-4 ounces of formula?

5 week old baby
Proud Mommy asked:

It is wanting to eat this every 3-4 hours. This is too much? I think that most children her age is still a 2 oz. He spits on a little just like normal children ago. But it seems just as we are constantly feeding and a lot!

  2. MomuttsMom says:

3-4 oz at a time for a 5 week old sounds pretty normal to me! My kids both took about that!

  3. Amber F says:

Feed your baby as often has he needs. My son is 5 weeks old and eats as much and as often as yours. Both of my sons did at that age.

Your Baby will let you know when he’s hungry. My daughter ate that before 5 weeks. If your still concerned ask you doctor at his next check-up.

You are not feeding him too much. Every baby is different I recommend a little bit of cereal in his bottle in the morning and some at night now doctors will tell you no way. But if he is spitting up alot you may want to ask doctor about the formula and if he wants more formula give it to him my granddaughter is almost a month and can drink 8 ounces of formula at a time. I am grandmother of 3 and have grown kids of my own so I wouldn’t steer you wrong.

No, that sounds perfect. I just helped a lot babysitting my grandson and granddaughter. They had good appetites like that and they are healthy and cute now. Sometimes they just wanted to be held so do that as much as possible. Just hold him and talk soft or sing. Show him a lot of smiles so he will know he is safe.

They will keep you busy for the first 6 months or so.

my daughter is 4 weeks and drinks 3 ounces sometimes every two hours. going by our two babies I would say that that is just about right. All babies are different though. I think all that matters is that they are gaining weight and not too much.

  8. My3Boys says:

It’s not too much. I don’t think my boys ever ate as little as 2 oz. Hard to say that early on, as they were all boob fed at that point…#3’s 5 weeks…I had to bottle feed formula at 5 weeks with #2 when I wound up with mastitis (NOTHING was getting through those clogs, let me tell ya)…he downed a 4 ozer like nothing, so I’d make 2 more oz in case he needed it…he usually took at least 1 more oz.

What’s normal for him is normal. It’s not too much.

  9. Happy Girl says:

My baby is 2 weeks old and can once in a while down 4 ounces of breast milk/formula mix. But he needed to put on weight.

  10. Dawn V. says:

My first would drink 3 1/2 ounces EVERY TWO HOURS when he came home from the hospital. My second started drinking four ounces around 3 weeks. My third started drinking 3 1/2 to 4 ounces at two weeks. So..it is very normal. You can’t compare any baby. They are all different. And if he is throwing up a little, you need to burp him about every 2 ounces or so. Don’t let him drink a bottle straight down this early.
You might also want to give him Mylicon Drops with permission from you pediatrician of course. :-)

    Good Luck!

My baby fed every 3-4 hours and took at least 4oz at this stage. As a result by 5 weeks old he had last feed at 11pm and slept through till 7am, waking for feed then back to sleep till 11am! Bliss!

My son is about a month and he is eating about that too…and I talked to our pedi about it and she said it was perfectly… He knows exactly how much he needs, and he won’t everfeed himself. Don’t stress yourself out over it…just trust him to know what he wants.
