first get a good supply in your fridge (or even your freezer, you can let breast milk thaw out and use it) for the day you won’t be able to keep your milk.

i personally have done that once…i pumped and dumped till late afternoon the next day, even though i didn’t have more than 2 drinks and felt fine. i had stored extra in my freezer 2 days before i went out, and i was able to thaw out what i needed. i let it thaw in the fridge the night i went out..then just warmed it back up in a pot on the stove till it was warm.

just don’t get DRUNK or you will be out of commission for as long as you are feeling the effects of a hangover…which could be all the next day and the morning of the 2nd day after your night out…basically, if YOU still feel like crap, your milk will be crap…so stock up on breast milk!

You are horrible…..How can you look into that childs eyes and face what you are doing to his only source of nutrition???

  5. blixa22 says:

Not really. The idea is to get rid of the milk produced during the time you had alcohol in your bloodstream (which would presumably be longer for more beers), with the amount removed equalling the amount the baby would have consumed (so you don’t increase supply or allow engorgement). I actually never did pump and dump because it’s so much hassle and for one drink (which is all I ever had), the amount of alcohol in the milk would be approximately infinitesimal… but if I were going to, I’d just pump instead of feeding, as much as the baby would have had, until the next morning.

Pump and dump is a myth.

Just pump enough to get your baby through the night before hand and once you are no longer drunk, you will be fine to nurse.

Once the alcohal is out of your blood, it’s out of your milk.

Wow, there are a lot of uneducated responses to your question! With the exception of “mommy to David”, nobody knows what they are talking about!!

Alcohol enters your breast milk the same way it enters your blood stream. As your body metabolizes the alcohol, the alcohol concentration in your breast milk will decrease the same way it exits your blood. It takes an average adult one hour to metabolize one alcoholic drink.

That being said: if you have two beers, it will take two hours before your breast milk is “alcohol free”

If you expect that your baby will need to nurse BEFORE the alcohol has had time to leave your milk, you would be wise to pump a few bottles in advance :)

Do not pump and dump. That is a myth! The alchohol will leave your milk about the same time as it leaves your bloodstream. You can go ahead and pump to relieve engorgement, but keep it like you would keep a stash in your fridge/freezer. There is nothing wrong with drinking a little while breastfeeding, just don’t get drunk. Actually, the beer can give a small boost to your supply.

I had the same question too when my little guy was younger, so when I had the chance to meet with a well-known lactation consultant, I asked her what the deal is. So here’s what you need to know about breast feeding and drinking.

First, you don’t always need to pump and dump. Alcohol works its way out of your breast milk much in the same way as it does out of your blood. A good rule of thumb then is that for every drink you have (1 beer, 1 shot, etc.) you will need to wait one hour for the alcohol to be out of your system and out of your breast milk. If after that time you still are feeling the effects of the alcohol, you should wait a bit longer to breast feed. Remember, your baby is much smaller than you are, so a small amount of alcohol will affect her more than it will affect you.

So, you know that the alcohol will eventually be eliminated from your breast milk. The only remaining problem is to think about milk supply. If you are going to go out on the town and drink quite a bit, it may take several hours to be sure the alcohol is out of your milk. In that case, your breasts may get quite full and you should pump and dump however much you need to to keep your breasts from getting engorged.

Bottom line: if you are only going to have a couple of drinks, empty your breasts as much as possible before going out, either by pumping or breastfeeding. Wait one hour for every drink you have to be sure breast milk is free of alcohol. In the end, moderation is key, so have a couple drinks, but don’t go crazy or you won’t be able to breastfeed for several hours.
