It’s up to the child’s pediatrician. Most don’t recommend starting a child on single grain cereal until she is 4 or even 6 months of age. After the child is accustomed to single grain cereal, the doctor will then recommend the child starts on vegetables and fruits, one at a time, each for 5-7 days to be sure the child can tolerate that particular fruit or vegetable before starting the next.
Solid foods, whether jarred foods, or cereal, or home-made babyfood, or table foods, are usually started sometime around 6 months or later. An occassional baby may be ready and/or need something a bit sooner (4-5 months) but never before that. And some babies dont’ want solids (or their parents opt to not offer) until 7-9 months or so — and that’s fine too.
Babies do not have the enzymes needed to digest anything other than breastmilk. They develop these enzymes around six months.
Some people do still want to start food sooner, but usually they use cereal, not actual food. Your sister is opening up her world to a whole lot of troubles—allergies, diabetes, excema, and just plain old messy clothes. It’s so much faster, cleaner, cheaper, and easier to wait till six months.
She’s a bit young. When I was in the hospital with my last baby, the nurses explained about baby’s tiny tummy.
It starts out the size of a pea, gradually growing to the size of a walnut over the course of a couple of months.
If you put too much into the baby’s belly, it’s gonna hurt the baby.
But hey—everybody’s different. Maybe her baby is big enough to give jar food to.
That’s a question I would pose to my doctor.
babies are meant to stay on milk only for at least 6 months (even up to a year some say), however, my son was weaned at 10 weeks due to severe intollerances and couldnt even stomach milk, this was done under strict medical and dietian supervision (thought i would point that out before any trolls start!) as he was loosing weight fast. and he was (and is) a perfectly happy 18 month old now.
my point is, dont do it without consulting a gp/dietitian or other professional as kidneys r still immature and cant process salt as well as other things
she can give her rice cereal but i think 10 weeks is a little young for veggies and fruit. 4-6 months would be better for adding anything besides cereal.
I am a big fan of waiting on solids until 6 months, when babies are actually properly ready to digest these things. Some parents start at four months. It is recommended to begin solids at around 4-6 months. Some parents even choose to do so later, which is completely fine.
10 weeks is too soon. They may be able to eat it…. but that doesn’t mean everything is going good on the inside. They aren’t capable of digesting and properly breaking it apart inside of their bodies. Chances are… the baby isn’t even absorbing any nutrients from the food. So it is only take away from nutrients the baby should be getting through breast milk or formula. It may cause stomach distress and gas also.
I would suggest talking to your cousin about this and maybe listing off a few of the reasons to wait that mothers mention here. Maybe she just doesn’t know when to introduce solids.
But, it is her child, all you can do is suggest waiting, you won’t be able to make her mind up for her, but maybe you can help better educate her on t his subject.
Depends on what she’s giving her, how much, and where her daughter is development wise.
It is fine to give a “supported sitter” (meaning she can hold her head up on her own) very pureed fruits and vegetabls (Gerbers 1st Foods is a good example). They can also have a little bit of rice cereal at this stage. She should still be getting the majority of her nutrition from formula though .
they say 3 months is when you can start giving babies jar food if there are no complications. but if the child is fine and full term and hungry all the time give them the food. my son was a couple weeks early but i swear he cought up fast. by the time he was 9 weeks he was starting to get fussy all the time and took bottle after bottle. so i gave him some bananas and o man he was is heaven. its a mothers instinct. ppl think doctors know everything and babies come with books but they dont. a mother has a natural instinct and you should use that. there is no neglect in giving a child food. if anything it would be in holding it back if they still hungry. but im not a specialist in babies, just a mother, so dont take my word as a doctors. And congrats on the new family member!
that far too young i started giving my son baby rice or milked down rusks ages 3 and half months, but wouldnt suggest jar food for at least 4 months, hey it states the ages on jar! i now have a son of 4 weeks old also and i would never feed him any age under 3 and half or even four months, shes very silly to put her child at risk all a baby needs at that age is milk
I gave it to my daught at 12 weeks and she was fine. She has been thriving on it. A bottle just wasnt doing it anymore and one meal of jar food a day made the world of difference.
Well, my baby is 2 months and 3 weeks now.. and I just started feeding her rice from a spoon. She does VERY well and Ive been putting rice in her milk for about a month now. She was constantly hungry. Yes doc. say dont give them rice cause they cant digest it yet, but I every baby is different and you cant always live by the book.
it dependss, they worldwide advice is u shouldn’t start 2 wean your baby until they are 6 months, but this has changed from 17 weeks. my health visitor told me that some babies can’t wait until 6 months so they advise between 17 weeks and 6 months and to judge when the baby is ready. every mum is different i have known a mum as little as 2 weeks to give their baby adult food. so it is mainly down to the mum
I started my baby at 11 weeks and as soon as i gave it to her, she wouldn’t have milk anymore, only at bedtime!! It’s fine. I don’t know anyone who has started later than 15 weeks!! x

I’ve always been told to wait till 6 months but have heard of people giving baby rice at 3 months and that was to help satisfy a really hungry baby.
I wouldn’t start without advice from your doc.
