Yep, it is fine. Don’t even bother to puree it. If it is nice and ripe, just mash it with a fork. You could cut it into chunks, but it is a bit slippery.
I tried giving my daughter some and she hated it. Not sure why. Now that she’s eating finger foods I may give it another shot since she’s not really paying attention to what she eats any more. lol

Yes it certainly is safe as long as the baby is old enough for solids, say 6 months and up.
I’d probably puree it and spoon feed it but I have heard of people allowing little babies to self-feed.

my mom once told me that she gave us regular food to all of my brothers and sisters after we were 4 months old.
