What is the soonest babies can be born healthy?
I had a co-worker who may have gone into labor today at 31 weeks with twins. I am only 23 weeks along myself. What is the earliest that a baby can be born healthy and have minial long term effects?

Twins do sometimes come early. A full term pregnancy is between 36 and 40 weeks, babies are considered vialbe (Able ti live outside of the womb, but with medical assiatance) at 25 weeks. Hope I helped! And good luck making it to 40 weeks yourself!

36 wks is preferred by docs for minimal premature complications.
Usually after 30 weeks. 32/33 weekers do relatively well w/ their major problems being feeding difficulty. It only improves w/ each additional week. 28 weekers can do well longterm but often have respiratory difficulties sometimes requiring intubation, cpap, or supplemental oxygen.
As for your coworker-the twins should do pretty well. Due to the twin gestation, they will be a little smaller and take a little bit longer to learn to eat. They may require feeding tubes until they get strong enough to eat their nutritional requirements. I’ve seen several sets of twins this gestation that just have to spend a couple weeks to 6 weeks after birth in the nursery until they can eat well.
Good luck w/ your pregnancy and w/ your friends’ preterm labor. They may be able to get it stopped and put her on bedrest for the next 5 weeks.
My mom had twins at 32 weeks. My brother Aaron is completely normal. My other brother unfortunately died from the cord wrapped around his neck….but that has nothing to do with gestation. My dad is a family practitioner and said that every week after 28 weeks is a very good chance of survival.
People are just telling you stories, yeah some survive but some dont.
If you’re 24weeks, you have around a 40% of them surviving.
26 weeks is about 60%.
37weeks should be around 100%

My aunts twins were born at 24 weeks. and told 30-40% chance before they were born, because one water broke.
They wanted her to las to 26 so shed have a 60% over 50%.
Theyre still alive, but one is actually doing terrible, and might pass. theyve both had blood transfusions, and only one was breathing on its own.
It’s best to be as far along as possible.

35 weeks is the earliest they can be born w/ minimal long term effects. I mean that is even 5 weeks early which is a long time for a baby to cook. They say 26-28 weeks a baby is viable outside the womb, although it all depends on the baby and it’s development. I mean some babies born at 35 weeks go home right away and some born at 36 weeks stay in the neonatal for awhile.
nowadays, there is so much tecnology. My cousin gave birth to twins at 25 weeks. It was a long haul and they needed to stay in the hospital for the first few months, but that was 14 months ago and they are beuatiful and healthy now.

Wow, this is a loaded question. Some babies are born at 24 weeks and have very few problems, but most often those born after 30 weeks are most often okay, some with eye issues, but otherwise okay. My nephew was born at 26 1/2 weeks. He was very small, but is totally fine today, 6 years later. The same day he was born a baby was born at 28 weeks and he has a whole chart full of problems. Mentally challenged, blind, respirator dependent, feeding tube dependent and many more. I guess it all depends on the child and the good Lord.
I don’t think there is a right answer as to when a baby can be born healthy because even near full term babies can have complications. I do know that they will not resuscitate a baby until it is 24 weeks. I reached that this week so I am thrilled. My daughter was born at 32 weeks. She has some developmental delays and a weak immune system. I know of others born at that time who did not do as well as she did. The world of preemies is very complicated. They can’t really be homogenized into one group.
