First of all, I’m not a parent. But I was wondering why babies need to eat in the middle of the night? Unlike adults, do they need several small meals throughout a 24 hour period, instead of three large meals, or what?

their bodies/brains are constantly growing and developing, and because they eat so little they have to eat constantly to keep their nutrition up.

Their stomachs are super tiny as newborns. My son needed to feed every 2-3 hours during the night when we first brought him home. He’s 6 months now and sleeps around 12 hours at night without waking. They adjust and usually can sleep through the night as they get older.

Yes babies are growing and need a certain amount on nutrients in a 24 hour period to continue to be a healthy growing baby. And yes babies eat Small amounts of Formula more frequintly throughout the day and the night, they eat usually between every 2 1/2 to 4 hours a day. MY daughter at every 2 hours untill she was 5 months old. Shes 9 months old and still eats once during the middle of the night.

Babies ae basically in a massive construction project and the raw materials are used up at a huge pace.
Look at a baby’s fist; their stomach is about that big, so they can’t eat much at any one time. Thus they need several meals a day so they can grow.

Because their tummies are so small and they grow so quickly all the time, babies usually dont start eating 3 meals a day until 12-18months or so.
